The action-packed Eid - Eid in the park
Thursday, November 8th, 2007. Filed under Govanhill.Organisers of the Govanhill Eid In The Park said they were ‘really delighted with the 1,000 people from all the different cultures who turned up on the day’ held in Govanhill Park and the nearby Larkfield Community Centre.
They included, as guest of honour, TV and film star Shamsad Akhter, who plays Meena Naveed the shop keeper’s wife, in the BBC1 Scotland’s comedy show, Still Game.
This was the Larkfield’s second Eid party and despite being smaller than the Eid On The Drive in Pollokshields, it was just as entertaining and action packed with something for everyone.
The day involved football matches in Govanhill Park for four under-13 teams trained by ALC; a procession from Govanhill Park to Larkfield; a concert, information and food stalls and outside activities for youngsters.
Police Chief, Inspector Stuart Carle, made his debut as a piper leading a parade. Eight ALC kids who had hand-made a banner which read ‘All Different But United’, flew it from the horse-drawn cart which took them through the parade.
Bailie James Scanlon said, ‘I’m delighted to be here on a day when we are celebrating our diverse commuities.’ Frank McAveeety, MSP for Shettleston said, ‘I’m really pleased to have been invited to celebrate Eid and find a way to understand each other as friends.’
Anas Sarwar was representing his father, Mohammed Sarwar, Westminster MP for Glasgow Central. He said, ‘I’m honoured to be here. After last year’s successful event I hope today will be another success.’
