The action-packed Eid - bad side of Eid

Thursday, November 8th, 2007. Filed under Pollokshields.

Another side of Eid surfaced after Cosybike owner Iain Urquhart was physically and verbally attacked by a group of 30 young Muslims and pulled out of the parade as a result.

Iain, from Govanhill, was pedelling his quirky, 7-seater, round bike to the start of the parade at Nan McKay Hall, when he was surrounded by a group of kids who took over the bike and sat on it.

He told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘They broke off the flag pole and started swinging it at me and my friend. We were punched, kicked and sworn at. This happened at around 6.30pm on Albert Drive and there were no police or adults around to help.’

He said he was really scared, shocked and disgusted by what happened. ‘After this experience I have lost all faith in my fellow weegies. I am reluctant to go to any similar events, though if there was better security, I might consider it.’

Iain set up his company only recently. The bike cost £8,000 and there are only 150 of them in the world – he has one of the only two in Scotland. It weighs a quarter of a tonne and is a popular fun feature at festivals and bike events. This was the first time any thing like this had ever happened to him. While the bike was not damaged the flag and carbon fibre pole were broken and will cost £400 to replace.

A spokesperson for Strathclyde Police stated that no complaint had been received in relation to this. Three people had been arrested on the day charged with breach of the peace but not in connection with the incident Iain experienced.
