Superb music and drama

Thursday, November 8th, 2007. Filed under Castlemilk.

St Margaret Mary’s Secondary School in Castlemilk did itself proud with a well orchestrated and interesting Annual Awards Ceremony last month.

It marked 50 years of St Margaret Mary’s Church in the parish. This gave the skilled drama team a great reason to reflect on life 50 years ago. And they didn’t pull their punches! Standing in the queue for the ‘stairheid lavvy’ in Gorbals was a (painfully) accurate reflection of life for those who first moved into the new housing scheme up the hill.

The music department were not to be outdone and produced a lovely DVD showing different school groups singing a variety of songs in appropriate locations. These ranged from Amazing Grace being sung in the chapel to Flower of Scotland being sung in school with gusto! The DVD can be purchased from the school and is well worth having as it shows the pride these pupils have in Castlemilk.

Head teacher James Hendrie set the tone by welcoming all the special guests including Brian McAlinden who retired as head teacher from the school last term.

Mr McAlinden presented more than 150 awards to pupils commending everything from ‘effort and good work’ to academic excellence in every subject taught. Head Girl Gillian Dunnachie and Head Boy John McGinty formally thanked everyone and the school returned to its usual mode of striving for excellence in all aspects of learning.
