Our Environment - Govan Greenzone

Thursday, November 8th, 2007. Filed under - Regular columns.

Greater Govan Environment Trust was delighted to receive an invitation from Fran Lundy of the Clean Glasgow Campaign to speak at the City Chambers on October 31.

It will be great to meet with others from around the city who are also working to make their communities cleaner and safer places.

With Govan Greenzone and the Govan Mutt Show providing some great photos for a powerpoint (courtesy of photographeer Eddie Aitken) the Trust will be privileged to show off what Govan residents have achieved.

As the 5th of November approaches, readers are encouraged to dissuade their children from setting fires made from items found in the street. Appealing as it may seem to gather old sofas, abandoned trikes and the like to make a wee bonfire on waste ground, it causes environmental damage.

Not only do the charred remains fail to make attractive displays, the chemicals given off during the burning are dangerous pollutants. They go into the air and are breathed in by people standing in the vicinity. I was utterly appalled this week to see such a chemical cloud coming off a bonfire set next door to a nursery school.

GGET (Greater Govan Environment Trust)  has opposed council plans to locate advertising hoardings on the main roundabouts that ‘gateway’ Govan.

We would be interested to know your views about this, so contact us by email on: greatergovan.environment@yahoo.co.uk.

Personally, I would rather those entering or travelling through our area were welcomed with floral displays and something colourful, and positive – something that says, ‘Welcome to Govan, it’s a great place’. Not just ads that say, ‘Buy buy buy‘. What do you think? Maybe it will be stencilled adverts on the behinds of police horses next!

Congratulations to the winners of the competitions held during Govan Greenzone. Ardlaw Street Nursery came up with some fab designs for the blue wheelie bins. They win £50 worth of gardening equipment. We also arranged for the planting of three apple trees at the nursery – thanks to John Hancox from the Children’s Orchard and to Katie Kelly from C space for helping out.

Demi Jo from Drumoyne Primary drew a fantastic design for a new playpark for Elder Park. She will be presented with her prize by Cllr John Flanagan on Friday November 9.

Please contact the Trust on greatergovan.environment@yahoo.co.uk. and listen to the Environment Show on Sunny Govan Radio, 103.5fm, every Friday 1-2pm.
