Birness brightened up

Thursday, November 8th, 2007. Filed under Pollokshaws.

Residents in Birness Drive, Pollokshaws, are among the first in the city to benefit from the 9 million Glasgow Housing Association is investing in Neighbourhood Quality Improvement schemes.

Pictured are tenants of New Shaws Housing Organisation at their new children’s play park which was formally opened by Councillors Colin Deans and James McNally last month. Nearby, a multipurpose games court was also opened with Ansar youth leaders helping out.The connecting areas between the high flats have been improved  with upgraded pathways and car parks, streetscaping, lighting and gardens.

Local people had campaigned to retain some mature trees adjacent to the high flats and Glasgow City Council’s Land and Environmmental Services, the designers and the construction company took great care to observe residents’ wishes.

‘This makes a tremendous difference,’ said one local mum. ‘The wee ones can play safely in the new play park and the older ones can enjoy a kick-about in the games area. Everyone else appreciates the places looking so much better.’
