Visit the Beeb’s riverside HQ
Thursday, September 6th, 2007. Filed under - South Side. The LOCAL NEWS has arranged for eight readers to be given an exclusive guided tour of BBC Scotland’s new £188 m Headquarters building at Pacific Quay. The HQ will be formally opened this month.
Staff have been moving into the building since April with everyone scheduled to have left the old premises at Queen Margaret Drive by the end of this month. The place is expected to be an exciting 24/7 part of the local community.
On the riverside next to Glasgow’s Science Centre, the 34,000 sq m. building was designed by leading international architect David Chipperfield. It has digital broadcasting facilities, offices, creative spaces and substantial public areas. On entering the triple-glazed edifice, giant red sandstone ‘steps’ can be seen rising 28.5 metres (93.5ft) from ground level to the fifth floor.
Each ‘step’ contains a studio and its roof is flexible public space for meetings, relaxing and programme audiences. The views from the inside of the building – particularly from these ‘steps’ – are simply wonderful. Â
Said BBC Scotland Controller Ken MacQuarrie, ‘This magnificent building is unique. It offers a fantastic working environment which will shape the future of broadcasting. We welcome our audiences to come in and see their BBC. It will set a standard for the whole of the BBC and for the broadcasting industry. Enormous credit is due to the joint BBC, Siemens and JCI team who have worked brilliantly together to make this happen.’
