Step through the door

Thursday, September 6th, 2007. Filed under - South Side.

The 18th annual Doors Open Day event is promising to be bigger and better than last year.

The weekend of 15-16 September is when you can visit buildings that are generally not open to the public. The Glasgow-wide celebration has 124 buildings open with guided tours and exhibitions at everything from courts and churches to mosques, offices, temples and museums.

In the Southside there are eight new buildings on the list from the most modern - the BBC Scotland HQ at one year old to the Castlemilk Stables(pictured above) at 257 years old.

Built in 1750, the Stables is the B-listed Georgian Stable Block of the former Castlemilk House (demolished in the 1960’s). Following a community led campaign it was restored by Glasgow Building Preservation Trust (GBPT) and re-opened formally last month as office space for Cassiltoun Housing Association.

There is an Information Hub at St Andrews in the Square, (off Saltmarket), which will have stalls and information about places listed in the Doors Open brochure. It will be open both days from 10am-4pm. Brochures are free and can be found in places such as the Tourist Information Centre in George Square.

An unusual event for Doors Open will be an exhibition and an evening of music, drama and discussion on Glasgow’s contribution to the abolition of the slave trade and the city’s links with the tobacco trade.  It is 200 years since slavery was abolished. This unique evening will start on Saturday September 15 at 7pm in St Andrews in the Square.

Organised by the GBPT with Glasgow City Council and a host of other partners, Doors Open Days offers fun and a great learning experience. For more information contact GBPT by tel: 0141 221 6061.
