It’s raining in sunny Govan
Thursday, September 6th, 2007. Filed under - Top Stories, Govan. How the weather changes on Sunny Govan Radio 103.5FM! The 24-hour station is now broadcasting a Polish language programme and it’s called ‘The Rainmen’s Land’ – Kraina Deszczowcow.
Thanks to John MacDonald, a key programmer and presenter at Sunny Govan, the hour-long show goes out each Sunday between 9am and 10am. It broadcasts a mixture of Polish music and conversation with some English being spoken to catch the interest of the Scots listeners.
The team putting the programme together is Michal Fik (27) Tomasz Dziedzic (26) and Adam Sebesta (34) soon to be joined by the first female voice, Aleksandra Korytnicka.
Tomasz originally contacted Sunny Govan Radio to promote a Polish comedy and mime show taking place in Glasgow Royal Concert Hall. ‘I sent out an email to all the media and John invited me to say something on air. He then asked if I’d be interested in doing some Polish programmes to help the Polish community. I talked it over with my friends and we decided to go for it.’
Front man on ‘The Rainmen’s Land’ is Adam. He is an acoustician who ran an artistes agency in Poland and managed and travelled with a famous Polish comedy group Kabrit Kabaret Rak.
‘I would have said when I was doing that, that I would never leave Poland. But I’ve been in Scotland two years now and my second daughter was born here, so things change!’ he said.
His day-time job is working in a distillery and his main music interest is Blues. ‘ I organised Blues Festivals all over Europe,’ said Adam, ‘But this is a professional turning point for me. I was missing the music and acoustic side of things.’
Michal is working at Glasgow airport in aircraft handling but his background is in radio in Poland. His musical interest is mainly rock and hard rock and Adam is fascinated by jazz.
Commented John, ‘It is a pleasant change to have the jazz. For those who miss the live programme, they can download podcasts from the biggest Polish web portal in the UK – www.kraina.glasgow24.pl
The Radio presenters are keen to have listeners’ suggestions so contact them by email: kraina@glasgow24.pl or see Sunny Govan’s website: www.sunnygovan.org and don’t forget to tune in to the Rainmen’s Land programme.
Incidentally, the title comes from a popular children’s story and cartoon animation in Poland, although it is also a reflection of Scotland’s current abundance of the heavenly water.
