BAE’s new apprentices
Thursday, September 6th, 2007. Filed under Govan.BAE systems welcomed the next generation of Clyde shipbuilders to their Scotstoun yard in August when 88 new apprentices were inducted into their new careers.
The new inductees bring the total apprentice intake to 120 in 2007. The apprentices will train to become draughts people and craft apprentices, including electricians, welders and metal workers.
BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions Managing Director, Vic Emery, said, ‘It is always great to see so many enthusiastic new faces ready to take up their position as the warship builders of the future on the Clyde. These new apprentices will add to the lifeblood of this business and will be working on some of the most advanced warships in the world.
‘Not only will they have the opportunity to help complete the Type 45 programme, they will also design and build the future aircraft carriers for the UK Royal Navy.
‘Thanks to such a strong order book, I am delighted that we have been able to employ a record number of apprentices this year and I am keen to watch them progress through their apprenticeships and on to long and rewarding careers within this business.’
BAE Systems Surface Fleet Solutions has the largest apprenticeship programme in Scotland and the 2007 intake is the biggest since the launch of the Scottish Modern Apprenticeship scheme in 2003.
