Lord Provost is new hospice chief

Thursday, August 9th, 2007. Filed under - South Side, Gorbals.

The Lord Provost of Glasgow, Robert Winter, made his first visit to Gorbals’ Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice in July in his capacity as the charity’s President.

Together with his wife, Sheena, the Lady Provost he learned about the work the Carlton Place
Hospice does and spent time with patients, volunteers and staff.

Mr Winter said, ‘As we saw at first hand , the care that patients receive at the Hospice is outstanding. The work of the staff is nothing short of exemplary and the dedication of the volunteers is humbling. My predecessors as Lord Provost have been deeply involved in the Hospice since Michael Kelly suggested that it should be the City’s wedding gift to the Prince and Princess of Wales. I am extremely proud to follow their example and I will endeavour to continue the same level of commitment and support.’

The Presidency of the Prince and Princess of Wales Hospice is an ex officio position, meaning that the Lord Provost of the day is automatically also the Hospice President.

Morag Cunningham, director of fundraising and marketing at the Hospice, said, ‘The Hospice is very privileged to have such a close association with The Lord Provost of Glasgow and has received tremendous support over the last 24 years. It was a pleasure to meet him and the Lady Provost. We look forward to working with him and to receiving his suggestions.’

The Hospice cares for terminally ill patients, their carers and families. There is no charge for its services and the Hospice is focused on helping people live longer, more fulfilling lives, despite having life limiting diseases. It relies heavily on volunteers and donations and anyone wishing to support the work of the Hospice should contact 0141 429 5599 or visit www.ppwh.org.uk.
