Flowers remember lost lives

Thursday, August 9th, 2007. Filed under Castlemilk.

The rain fell on Flowers on the Railings Day in Castlemilk covering the tears of many people who have lost loved ones.

Started three years ago, to remember young people in particular, who died from drugs and addictions as well as other causes, the touching scene of hundreds of bunches of flowers tied to the railings on Castlemilk Drive eased the heartbreak for a little while.

Between 400 and 450 bunches of flowers festooned the railings around Castlemilk Drive and a small company of people stayed to share an non-religious service of remembrance in the community centre led by the Rev John Miller as one of his final duties before his retirement.

The organising committee is working to secure a permanent garden of peace within the Japanese Garden at the sports centre so that people will be able to sit and remember in their own way and time. But once a year this public way of remembering lost lives will continue.

Cameron Duncan, the local undertaker and treasurer of the organising group said, ‘‘Castlemilk community showed their support again for Flowers on the Railings. Despite the rain, a large number of bunches of flowers indicates the depth of feeling.’

The committee, chaired by former local Councillor Christine Devine, is now pushing to have the garden ready for next year’s Flowers on the Railings time.
