Mystery surrounds the Govanhill Festival’s talent competition.

‘We were so busy running the show we didn’t note down their names!’ said event organiser Maureen Reid, Community Development Assistant at Govanhill Community Development Trust.

The hot sun ensured that several hundred people came along to the Govanhill Festival in Govanhill Park. Organised by the Trust, which is a wholly owned subsidiary of Govanhill Housing Association, the day was a great success.

Around 15 organisations crammed into the small park offering advice and information. There were also bouncy castles and other activities which included a mini zoo – courtesy of the Glass House in Queen’s Park.

On the stage was Glasgow-based solo artist Tarquair, who is an acoustic folk musician whose live performance went down well with the assembled crowds. Another hit was the rap band Lyrical Rebels, who rapped about how great the Govanhill Festival was. This was followed by the Clachaes (Nae Kiddin), the folk/rock band. The final performances came from the drama group The Prince’s Trusts Da Eyes Of Da Youth, who put on some mesmerising moves.

The finale was a Karaoke Talent Competition. with funny moments from some of the kids. The first prize of £25 in vouchers went to the group of five boys who sang ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone.’ Second prize of £15. in vouchers went to a young boy who sang, ‘Murder Murder.’ The third prize of £10 in vouchers went to the youngest competitor who sang, ‘Flower of Scotland.’

Anne Marie Millar Southside Central Councillor said, ‘I am delighted to be here on this wonderful day. The  weather has certainly brought out the numbers.’

Frank McAveety, the Shettleston MSP said, ‘It’s great to see a great mix of people.’

At the Trust, Maureen said, ‘It was a great success. I am really happy with both the turn out and the really hot sun. Everybody seemed to have had a good day, especially the children who were spoilt for choice with the variety of activities. But we would welcome having the names of the winners of the competition for the record!’
