More than 27,000 Glasgow, primary 7 pupils attended the Choices For Life event at the SECC last month.

This annual event, now in its eighth year, prepares pupils to make the right life choices as they go to secondary school.

Around 43 pupils from St Francis Primary in Gorbals went along and were taught about not taking drugs, not drinking, smoking or bullying and not succumbing to peer pressure. Music, theatre and interactive puzzles were used to put the messages across.

The format was like a concert and featured little rocker L’il Kim. The 16 year old has had chart success with his singles and debut album.

The three day event was hosted by Clyde 1’s Suzie McGuire and Romeo and featured an array of live acts. Family Fortune style quizzes and messages from celebrities were part of the line-up.

The event was organised by Strathclyde Police, Scottish Drugs Enforcement Agency and a host of other partners.

John Neilson, Assistant Chief Constable (Community Safety), said, ‘Choices For Life is an excellent platform from which young people are provided with important information and advice to assist in making informed choices at a vital stage in their lives.’

One of the pupils at the event was Alicia McDonald who is going on to Holyrood Secondary.  She said, ‘After this event I feel a lot more confidant about going to secondary school and can’t wait to start.’

Jack Barclay, who also went along said, ‘I have learnt that taking drugs or drinking can lead you down the wrong path. I have also learnt that bullying is not cool and that the people who hang around with them are doing so because they are scared.’
