Jimmy faces future

Thursday, July 12th, 2007. Filed under Govan.

A portrait of Govanite Jimmy Reid, of Upper Clyde Shipbuilders fame – has been unveiled at the People’s Palace to mark his 75th birthday.

It is the work of artist Barry Atherton assisted by Linda Atherton. More than just a likeness of the trade unionist-cum writer, it has been a collaborative project with Jimmy his family, friends and former colleagues.

More than 60 people and objects are represented in the portrait and each can be identified. Born in Govan on 9 July 1932, Jimmy was a member of the Youth Parliament at 15.  He became a leader of the Upper Clyde Shipbuilders who campaigned in 1971 against redundancies which threatened the future of shipbuilding on the River.
