Weir pumps finally sold

Friday, June 8th, 2007. Filed under - Top Stories, Cathcart.

Workers were relieved to hear the news that Jim McColl, head of Clyde Blowers plc, has bought Weir Pumps for £50 million and saved 600 jobs.

After weeks of uncertainty, during which Swiss based Sulzer AG pulled out of buying the Cathcart based factory for £48 million at the last minute.

The new owner has promised to retain the maximum number of jobs and also to invest in a promised new factory on London Road in Cambuslang.

Kenny Jordan, regional officer for the union Amicusm, said, ‘We are delighted that Jim McColl has bought the business. Everyone feels a great sense of relief knowing he is taking over even if he cannot guarantee that 100% of the jobs will remain. However, he will try to keep any job cuts to the absolute minimum. Compared to the previous bid by Sulzer AG who wanted to cut the jobs to under 200, this is a lot better.’

The 17.5 acre site will have to be vacated by 2009, because it has been sold to Cala Homes for £25 million. The company plans to build 493 luxury homes and flats there.
