    Sarwar’s son is guilty

Friday, June 8th, 2007. Filed under - South Side.

The son of Glasgow Central MP Mohammed Sarwar is facing jail after he was found guilty of money laundering at the High Court in Glasgow.

Father of two Athif Sarwar was found guilty of laundering various sums in 2003 at the headquarters of United Wholesale Scotland Ltd in Maxwell Road, Pollokshields.

The 28-year-old, moved money through his company, which he split off from United Wholesale Groceries Ltd, the cash-and-carry company built up by his family. His co-accused and Assistant Manager, 43-year-old Mansoor Khan, was found not guilty of money laundering.

Mohammed Sarwar MP said that he would contest the verdict and maintained that his son was innocent.

Mr Sarwar said, ‘I am disappointed and I genuinely, sincerely and passionately believe that my son has done nothing wrong. Everything was legal and above board. We will contest the verdict. There was no shred of evidence to convict and we will appeal against the sentence. I am certain that justice will win.’

Sentencing has been deferred until June to allow time for background reports, and Athif Sarwar has been released on bail.
