Yoga guru to visit Glasgow

Monday, March 5th, 2007. Filed under - South Side.

Yoga sessions with one of the world’s leading practitioners – Dr Ram Dev Ji from India – will be held in Glasgow from Thursday 19 to Tuesday 24 July.

Thousands of people are expected to flock to the events. So to book your place early, contact Mrs Sunita Poddar whose vision has persuaded the Guru to come to Scotland.

Since early this year Mrs Poddar has been giving free yoga lessons to those who have attended her daily classes in Lambhill Care Home, Kinning Park. ‘More than 15 million people around the world have benefited from learning to breathe properly through this form of yoga,’ she said. I believe if people here have the same chance, we will be well on the way to a much healthier Scotland within ten years.’

She hosted a visit from Dr Ram Dev Ji’s partner, Acharya Bal Krishana Ji last month. He spoke to many of Mrs Poddar’s students after a whistle stop tour to check out possible venues in Glasgow for the yoga sessions in July. Through his interpreter Col. V.K. Dmir, he said, ‘We have brought the ancient art of India to you, free. It is up to each person to take up that opportunity. Dr Ram has made yoga so simple it is easy for everyone to understand. By adopting this as a way of life, the body, mind and spirit will be healthier and the whole of society will benefit.’

Kinning Park Councillor Shaukat Butt was instrumental in enabling the visitors to see Glasgow City Chambers where the banqueting hall was examined as a possible venue and the guests were entertained by the Lord Provost. Said Councillor Butt, ‘I had the honour of launching the classes when they started in Lambhill Court Care Home. They have my full support. All the city’s venues will be offered free for the event in July.’

With her husband, Sam, Mrs Poddar is a director of Lambhill Care Homes Ltd and her classes are held in Lambhill Court care home in Kinning Park. The building was once a school and the former gym – which is currently a large lounge for residents where functions such as Burns lunches and St Patrick’s Day entertainments are held – has been used for the yoga sessions.
