UK GROUNDBREAKING DAY

Greater Govan Environment Trust are barking up the right tree because their ‘Every Dog Has Its Day’ dog show last year won a prestigious award from CSV Make a Difference Day.

Trust Chair, Sarah Findlay and Hugh Donaghy, Chair of Drumoyne Community Council were at the glittering award ceremony in London held by CSV last month. ‘The ceremony was fab,’ said Sarah. ‘We were so pleased to bring back the ‘UK Groundbreaker’ award to Govan. Ken Bussey was ill and couldn’t travel so Hugh Donaghy attended as the community council had co-funded the ‘Every Dog Has its Day’ event with Strathclyde Police.’

Pete Waterman, from ‘Pop Idol’ made the presentation to us. He was really chatty and seemed genuinely interested in what we are trying to achieve in Govan.’ Plans are afoot to hold another ‘Every Dog Has Its Day’ show this year in Elder Park.

RECYCLING IN FOCUS

The average person in Scotland generates about ¾ of a tonne of waste every year. In an area like Greater Govan, that means we could fill Ibrox stadium several times over, writes Ken Bussey, Secretary of Greater Govan Environment Trust.

By the end of 2005, just over 25% of Scotland’s waste was being recycled. That’s the Good News! In Glasgow, although the amount being recycled is growing, it still hasn’t reached the 25% average! We have to change that and show that we can achieve, if not beat, our targets.

It’s vital that we in Greater Govan play our part. Most own-door properties have blue Recycling Bins with a kerb side collection every 4 weeks. But till the Council’s kerbside recycling collection scheme kicks in within the next two years for flatted properties, tenements and high rise, we ask everybody to use the local recycling facilities.

These are in various locations including: ASDA store, Helen Street; libraries at Ibrox and Elderpark; subway stations at Ibrox and Kinning Park; community centre at Nimmo Drive and bins at Harmony Row Car Park, Garmouth Street, Howat Street and at the Shieldhall Depot.
Don’t forget to utilise the 3 recycling projects that are currently operating in Greater Govan. Spruce Carpets at 308 Broomloan Road, telephone 0141 425 1555 to donate and to buy quality carpet and carpet tiles.

Second Opportunities at 302 Broomloan Road, telephone 0141 425 1177 take large items of furniture and white electrical goods to be recycled.

Starter Packs Glasgow at 41 Burleigh Street telephone 0141 440 1008 welcome unwanted household items – bedding, crockery, cutlery – to provide packs for people who are moving into their own accommodation but have no household possessions.
