    Gorbals homes to be improved

Monday, March 5th, 2007. Filed under Gorbals.

Tenants in Gorbals’ Waddell Court and Commercial Court can look forward to £15 million worth of refurbishment work on their homes over the next three years.

The New Gorbals Housing Association (NGHA) has secured the funding from the Glasgow Housing Association (GHA), on whose behalf they manage the housing stock, to improve 408 properties in the two streets.

Danny Bradley, Assistant Director of Investment and Regeneration for GHA, said, ‘The work planned for the Gorbals area will dramatically improve the properties and neighbourhood, ensuring better homes and better lives for our tenants. New Gorbals LHO has been working closely with its tenants to ensure modern, re-furbished properties they can be proud to live in – in fact it is the tenants themselves on the LHO committee who have prioritised the spending.’

The money will be spent on external overcladdding which provides insulation, eradicates dampness and dramatically improves the building’s appearance. Also planned are new entrances and balconies to improve security, new kitchens, bathrooms and heating systems and re-wiring of the properties.

Kirsty Fotheringham, Community Housing Manager of New Gorbals Housing Association,  said, ‘This is a major regeneration project for Gorbals that will deliver improved living conditions for residents as well as considerable environmental benefits for the community as a whole.  The initiative is part of our strategy to deliver an enhanced standard of living to the community and ensure an environment that is consistent with 21st century life.’

Property specialists Currie & Brown are consultants on the project, and the team includes CCG Construction Group with FBN Architects and the Wates Group with 3D Architects.
