The Dixon’s new wheels

Thursday, February 8th, 2007. Filed under Govanhill.

With tremendous local support, The Dixon Community in Govanhill has purchased a new, 15-seater, mini bus – their third in three years.

The £23,000 was raised by efforts large and small during 2006. And at a happy afternoon tea on Friday 26 January, Councillor Ann Marie Millar and Constable Kevin Mason symbolically handed over the minibus keys to representatives of the users of the Dixon Community services.

A voluntary organisation, the Dixon provides care and support, advice, information and therapeutic activities to older people and carers in the Southside of Glasgow.

A team of police officers, led by Constable Mason, ran the Great Scottish Run in aid of the mini bus appeal. Others who contributed included Community Sparkplugs, Gorbals Initiative, The Trades House of Glasgow and the Robertson Trust. But dozens of fund raising events were organised and supported by people who use the Dixon services or are connected to the place at 635 Cathcart Road.

‘It was a wonderful day,’ said Councillor Millar. ‘And it reflects the caring community in Govanhill.’

Said Sheila Halley, External Manager, ‘This is the result of a lot of hard work and we are very grateful for this support.’ Added Michelle McGuigan, Day Care Manager, ‘We were delighted with the response to the appeal. It all mounted up. Now we’d like to raise £5000 to improve the décor and the front entrance to the building by the end of this year!’

Driver Joe Sweeney, who has transported Dixon people for the past 14 years, was a happy man, ‘The new mini bus is ten times better than the 13-year-old one it has replaced. This one has electric windows, heated windows and it is like driving a luxury car – only bigger.’
