Govan’s Tree

Thursday, January 11th, 2007. Filed under Govan.

Govanites young and old turned out to see the lights on Govan’s first official public Christmas tree, turned on.

The 25ft tree was donated by Glasgow City Council’s (GCC) Land Services department. Govan Councillor Bailie John Flanagan performed the switch-on.

He told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘This is Govan’s first official Christmas tree. We hope that the community enjoys a good Christmas and that 2007 is a good year for Govan.’ At the same  time, Santa turned up at Govan Cross to give out presents and fruit to the young spectators.

Dick Carabine, Chair of Govan Community Council, said, ‘I think it’s wonderful having this Christmas tree.’

Local resident, Cathy McLeod, told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘I love it. I just live across the road and it brightens up the area.’ Her fellow Govan resident, Sandy Black, added, ‘This was good.  Next year, it would be nice to have some Christmas lights to go with it.’
