Not a cowboy hat nor a shooter was in evidence at the funeral of Florence Gibbs secretary of the
Grand Ole Opry at Linn crematorium on October 17.

Here many friends and fans of the Govan Road institution packed the service which was conducted by the Rev Archie Robertson recently retired from East Wood Parish Church.

Born and brought up at Shotton Colliery, County Durham, Flo attended Horden Girls’ Grammar School and was a member of the Girls’ Adventure Corps. She achieved bronze, silver and gold in the Duke of Edinburgh Award scheme.

A qualified youth and community Education worker, she took up the active running of the Grand Ole Opry on her retiral from Strathclyde Region. She kept the Opry books, booked the bands, ordered supplies, organised staff and dedicated her time to  making the place the delight it was to fans of the Wild West.
