Karate annual gala day

Thursday, November 30th, 2006. Filed under Toryglen.

Anyone interested in the martial art Itosu-Ryu as taught by the Ronin Karate Club should make their way to the Club’s annual Gala Day Competition on Sunday 10 December in the Geoff Shaw Hall, Toryglen.

Teacher (Sensei) Charles Hunter told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘More than 100 pupils are expected to take part in both kata and kumite. All will receive a trophy or a medal for competing. Many parents come along to see the spectacle and enjoy the Gala Day where there will be a Tombola. This is not just a competition day. It is a celebration for all the club members, friends and family and engenders a happy, joyful community spirit.’

Helpers and officials enjoy an evening meal together afterwards to help them wind down and start planning next year’s calendar of events.

Results from the annual Winter Course and the dan gradings were:

1st Dan: Dylan Ashe, Allan Davenport, Ian Wilson, Stuart Wilson, Nicole Silvestro, Steven Want, Collin Gibb, Natasha Charleston, J. Coyle and Daniel Wilson.

2nd Dan: Shayne Mc Cann, Ian Campbell, Leslie Anne Walker, Mellisa Liggat and Ross Buchanan.

The four hour course allows all dan grades to gain valuable experience in teaching others as well as improving their own basic knowledge. The large turnout shows the success of this type of event.
