Colourful Toryglen to go
Thursday, November 30th, 2006. Filed under Toryglen. The Toryglen tower block made famous by a Sony TV advert is set to be demolished in the New Year.
The Queen’s Court flats, built in 1968, have lain empty since May. They were splattered with 70,000 litres of red, green, blue and yellow paint in the advert for ‘Bravia’ high-definition LCD televisions.
Workmen have weakened the 22-storey high-rise flats in preparation for the controlled explosion that will bring down the building. A number of low-rise homes, also featured in the advert have been earmarked for demolition next year and tenants are currently being consulted about the future use of the site.
Margaret Brittain, Community Housing Manager of Orchard Grove Housing Association, said, ‘The Sony advert gave the community of Toryglen a great boost and an enhanced sense of pride. We held lots of community events at the time the advert was being filmed and I’m sure local people will remember the experience for many years to come.’
She added, ‘We are now looking at the future of Toryglen and once the block comes down early next year it will mark a great new beginning.
