Visible help at the Hidden Gardens

Monday, October 23rd, 2006. Filed under Pollokshields.

Pollokshields’ Hidden Gardens had more than 20 pairs of helping hands to create new facilities using their £5000 worth of stock from B&Q.

The volunteers mucked in to make a new composting area, establish a wormery and build raised planters which are suitable for children and people with disabilities.

Danny Lowe, from the Govanhill Recycling and Environmental Action Team (GREAT), brought people from his project to help build the compost bins.

He said, ‘Our guys are all around 16 or 17, so working with the volunteers at the Hidden Gardens was a valuable experience as they got to work with people from different age groups. They worked hard and their work was appreciated.’

The new supplies and materials came from B&Q’s ‘You Can Do It’ awards which the Hidden Gardens won earlier this year. It was the only Scottish winner and was selected from more than 2000 applicants.

The new facilities will be used to teach people how to grow their own vegetables and raise awareness of the importance of recycling through home composting.

Said Clementine Sandison of the Hidden Gardens, ‘We’re really pleased with the turnout and the number of people that came to help. It made a big difference to how fast the work was done and it was nice to get so many involved.’
