Thursday, October 12th, 2006. Filed under Govanhill.Holyrood Secondary School celebrated their 70th anniversary with a special Mass in Holy Cross Church attended by Glasgow’s Archbishop Mario Conti.
More than 500 past and present pupils and staff filled the Govanhill church including Father Broderick who was one of the first pupils through Holyrood’s doors in the inaugural class of 1936.
The mass was celebrated by 16 priests who were all former pupils.
The service was followed by events in the school including an exhibition of photographs and records from the school’s history, a fashion show and a drama performance set during World War Two.
Holyrood head teacher Tom McDonald told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘It was a very enjoyable occasion where we celebrated the traditions and successes of Holyrood Secondary School. It was very rewarding to see the response from former pupils and the wider community, both those present and those who sent their best wishes.’
Holyrood has its fair share of famous alumni. Laura McMonagle, star of sitcom River City, attended the Mass in Holy Cross. Travis front man Fran Healy and Simple Minds’ Jim Kerr were among the former pupils who sent goodwill greetings.
