Two Cardonald College students won top prizes at the Craftex Trades House competition in the city centre’s Trades Hall.

Gary Murray and Alasdair Kearney both scooped £200 prizes in the contest, which has over 40 specialist categories from cake decorating to stonemasonry.

From King’s Park, Gary (27) came first in the Advanced Graphics section with his design for a direct mail campaign for Shakespeare’s Macbeth.

Said Gary, who studied for an HND in Visual Communication and Graphic Design for Print and New Media, ‘The award was the icing on the cake! Winning top spot in the competition was a real bonus and fuelled my efforts to carry on and start the Advanced Diploma in Graphic Design at Cardonald College, ‘I hope to put my portfolio together this year while I finish my studies. After that I want to secure a job within the industry.’

Alasdair (21), from Giffnock, won the top prize in the Advanced Video Production category for his documentary ‘The Buckie Brigade’, filmed in Glasgow. He has completed an HND in Television Production and Operation and told the LOCAL NEWS, ‘I am delighted to win the award. There were a lot of other good videos in my category. The production of the documentary took a lot of hard work but I am very pleased with the results. I will continue my studies at the Royal Scottish Academy of Music and Drama hopefully to get a degree in film production.’

College Principal Ros Micklem added, ‘Many of our students have exceptional talent and skill in their field so I am delighted to see that some of them took advantage of the Trades House competition to showcase this. A considerable amount of time and effort goes into competing in events like this and I am thrilled that Gary and Alasdair’s hard work paid off. I wish both students every success with their future ambitions.’
