Govanites help mugged OAP
Thursday, September 14th, 2006. Filed under Govan.Police are still looking for the man who snatched Margaret Hart’s pension money out of her hand around 8.10am on Monday August 21 outside the Post Office in Govan Cross Shopping Centre.
But big-hearted local people had a whip round which practically made up for the lost cash. Regulars at the Sunday car boot sale in Copland Road and customers at Mr Ali’s newsagent’s shop and Isobel’s Copland Diner dug deep into their own pockets when they heard the news.
Six-year-old Andrew McGilp with his gran Margaret McGilp, presented the gift to the astonished pensioner. ‘I never dreamed this would happen,’ said Margaret Hart, who has recovered well from the mugging. ‘I’ll not make myself a prisoner because of what happened. You can make up lost money but you can’t make up for a lost life,’ said the widow.
‘I’ll just be very careful about putting my money away before I leave the Post Office in future.’
Eddie Aitken, who organised the whipround commented, ‘This is from the real people of Govan. We asked young Andrew to present the money to make the point that not all young people are the same.’
