Breast cancer catwalk
Thursday, September 7th, 2006. Filed under Shawlands, Croftfoot. Two Southside women have been chosen to become catwalk models for Breast Cancer Care Scotland’s annual Scottish fashion show.
May Deanie, from Shawlands, and Devita Dow, from Croftfoot, will appear on the catwalk on Thursday September 28, once in the afternoon and once in the evening. National Tyres and East Kilbride Shopping Centre will sponsor the show at the city centre Radisson Hotel.
The unique thing about the fashion show is that all of the 14 featured models, 13 women and one man, have breast cancer. May (42) and Devita (46) wanted to be in the show ‘to get people talking about breast cancer and breast awareness’.
Mum of one May, who works as an addiction development officer, discovered a lump herself five years ago. She started running after her reconstructive surgery and now runs the women’s 10k regularly.
May said, ‘Having breast cancer has made me appreciate things that little bit more. Modelling for Breast Cancer Care Scotland is, to me, the final stage of my recovery.’
Devita was diagnosed in 2002 at the age of 42. The only member of her family to have had breast cancer, local government employee Devita said that she now looks at life from a different perspective and has become a stronger person. ‘I want to show people there is life, love and joy after breast cancer,’ she said.
The afternoon show will be presented by newsreaders Jackie Bird and Shareen Nanjiani. There will also be an auction of ‘money-can’t-buy’ items afterwards.
Breast Cancer Care’s Colin Graham said, ‘The fashion show is a glamorous, uplifting and incredibly inspiring event that celebrates the beauty and courage of our models, with a serious underlying message that it is possible to look good and feel confident after a diagnosis of breast cancer.’
BCCS provides information, practical assistance and emotional support for anyone affected by breast cancer. The fashion show is their main fundraising event and they hope to beat last year’s total of over £10,000.
