Books a-go-go at Pollok
Thursday, September 14th, 2006. Filed under Pollok.Pollok kids and their parents joined Nitshill Councillor Alex Glass and Pollok MP Ian Davidson at Pollok Library for the Second Annual Children’s Summer Reading Challenge Awards.
All the children who took part in the Reading Challenge, a summer-holiday long programme where children are encouraged to borrow and read books from the local library, received a certificate and a badge from Councillor Glass. The project is part of a UK-wide programme.
Councillor Glass said, ‘This is the second year I’ve presented the certificates and it’s heartwarming to see the number of kids participating. It’s a testament to the library staff and the effort made to make it a success.’
Some of the children involved won additional awards for their reading. Pollok MP Ian Davidson presented each of these children with a book. The under-8s award for reading the most books went to six-year-old Mark McDaid, who read over 20 books in the break. The over-8s went to Paige Murray, who read over 30 books. Omar Amin took the award for exceptional effort, and the ‘most dedicated readers’ were Shaun Vannet and Beth Hutchin.
Mr Davidson said, ‘I’m very glad to support Pollok Library in encouraging more youngsters to enjoy reading, and I’m glad to see parents here encouraging their children to read.’
Pollok Library’s Customer Services Manager Christine Stewart told the LOCAL NEWS that the Reading Challenge attracted over 110 kids this year. The theme of the challenge was spies and mysteries, and each kid received a small prize for every three books they got through.
Christine said, ‘I think it was an absolute success. It was a joy to see 119 kids coming into the library to borrow books.’
The Library runs a library club every Monday night at 7pm during term-time.
