Filed under - South Side, - Top Stories, Gorbals. The great-niece of a Gorbals war hero joined descendants of Victoria Cross recipients at Westminster Abbey in London to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Victoria Cross, Britain’s highest award for bravery in battle. Helena McClymont, great-niece of James Stokes VC, said, ‘It was absolutely spectacular, a phenomenal day, not just to remember my great-uncle, but for all the veterans. It was just so emotional. Even the weather was great and the food was superb. It was a day I’ll never forget.’
Helena’s great uncle won the Victoria Cross after he captured 17 German soldiers during fighting in the Netherlands in 1945.
Mr Stokes died aged 29 after sustaining eight bullet wounds while attacking a German machine-gun position twice single-handed. He is remembered alongside fellow veterans in the Gorbals Rose Garden.
The Bishop of London gave the address at Westminster before the recipients’ descendants moved to St James’ Square for refreshments and an address from HRH the Prince of Wales and a 15-minute display from the band of the Light Division.
