Tae Kwon Do champion

Saturday, August 12th, 2006. Filed under - South Side, Cardonald, Govanhill, Pollokshields.

A Govanhill teenager saw off hundreds of competitors from around the world to win both a gold and silver medal at the World Tae Kwon Do championships in the USA. Parmjeet Jassal won a gold medal in ‘poomsae’, or patterns and a silver in ’sparring’ at the competition in Anaheim, California. The 18-year-old said, ‘It’s a great feeling and a good experience to see people from all around the world – there were people from the Philippines and Ecuador – and people of different levels competing.’

Parmjeet has just left Holyrood High School and hopes to study Social Care at Cardonald College next year.

She has been training with the Glasgow South Traditional Tae Kwon Do Club for around three years and has a red belt with black tags, just one grade away from black belt. Parmjeet hopes to achieve her black belt in September.

The club’s instructor, Pierce Williams, a 2nd Dan who himself won two silver medals at the contest, said, ‘She did really well and it was a great experience for her. Hopefully it will spur her on to greater things in the future.’

The Glasgow South Traditional Tae Kwon Do Club meets in Daisy St Neighbourhood Centre on Tuesdays and East Pollokshields Multicultural Centre on Thursdays.
