Flowers on the Railings Day in Castlemilk blossomed for the second year as people remembered local young ones who have died through drugs and other causes.
For 10 days, bouquets festooned the railings to commemorate lost loved ones. ‘There were at least as many as last year,’ said Cameron Duncan, funeral director, a committed member of the group that organised the event for the first time in 2005. ‘It was a very successful day and followed last year’s great success. We hope to take this further in future years.’
More than 100 people attended a brief act of remembrance conducted by the Rev Dr John Miller, Castlemilk East Church of Scotland, in the Community Centre.
Dr Miller said, ‘All day people brought flowers. By the end of the day there must have been 200 bunches, each with its own special message of remembrance. Throughout the week you could see people stopping to read the cards and messages remembering the lost lives.’
Three artists from The National Galleries of Scotland, who will offer designs to improve the garden at Castlemilk Sports Centre to make it a memorial or ‘peace place’ for relatives and friends, had informal discussions on the day with people who had ideas they wanted considered. The National Galleries also produced and distributed leaflets to schools and local organisations and designed posters displayed in the area. Their Outreach Officer, Helen Watson, said, ‘The National Galleries is delighted to be part of this unique initiative and is supplying creative support.’
